This was the year I remember that the Grand Champions were first released in the United States, and very quickly vanished. They were a very simple set of horses that didn't have any fancy markings, or accessories. They even didn't come with bio cards or names. These also didn't have the GC logo on their hips.
"You were meant to cut out the fence on the package, and slip it into the slot on the foodbin"
The First Horses, like the following years, were released in a variety of ways – as Stallions with tack, as Family Sets, and as Mare & Foal sets. Single Foals were also available in Canada – and they had long hair! A few Stallions were even released with Riders.
I'm not sure if this stable was ever released.
Grand Champions were stabled with the best of them. From the start, stable & corral sets were an an inseparable part of the GC experience. Though only the first stable came with horses - the Pinto Mare & Foal, The Palomino Mare & Foal, & the Sorrel Mare & Foal - each stable was highly detailed with a variety of accessories for hours of fun. There were two basic stables and a myriad of stalls and carrying cases. Each of these were re-released many times over the years with new designs and accessories, providing every horse a home to call his own! The Family Sets
The family came in six different sets; Appaloosa, Black, Palomino, Pinto, Sorrel, & Silky White.
Stallions
There were six basic stallions, all in the "classic" pose - walking with the right front raised, and head turned in slightly. They came with a dark blue brush, and plastic foodbin. These six stallions were cast from a single colour of plastic and had only basic markings - socks, blazes; their bodies were not shaded with airbrushing like the later horses were.
ALL SIX STALLIONS EVEN CAME WITH SOUND!!
Riders were a part of the Grand Champion world from the very beginning. Even the very first set of horses were released in riding sets! Here's one of the first - and English Rider and her Silky White Stallion. She's a much simpler doll then the later versions, her clothes are simply molded plastic. However, the accessories are neat - there's even a bouquet of roses!
These six sound stallions look just like regular stallions released amongst this year, except they have a small button on their backs (that can be easily hidden with a saddle). When pressed, the horse goes through a set of galloping, snorts, and whickers.
